Water Filter Micron Rating Explained: 1-Micron vs 5-Micron Filters
Choosing the correct water filter micron rating is essential when designing an effective water filtration system. Many people replace filters without understanding what the micron number actually means or how it affects water quality, flow rate, and filter lifespan.
A micron rating determines the size of particles a filter can remove from water. Choosing the wrong rating can result in poor filtration, reduced water pressure, frequent replacements, or inadequate protection for equipment such as reverse osmosis membranes.
Whether you are filtering municipal water, borehole water, or water for commercial applications, understanding micron ratings helps you select the correct filtration solution.
What Is a Micron in Water Filtration?
A micron is a unit of measurement used to describe extremely small particles.
One micron (µm) equals one-millionth of a meter.
In water filtration, the micron rating indicates the approximate size of particles a filter is designed to capture.
For example:
- A 50-micron filter removes larger particles such as sand and visible sediment.
- A 5-micron filter removes much smaller suspended particles.
- A 1 micron filter provides finer filtration for sensitive applications.
The smaller the micron rating, the finer the filtration.
How Do Water Filter Micron Ratings Work?
A water filter micron rating describes the size of particles that can pass through the filter media.
A filter with a:
Higher Micron Rating
Examples:
- 50 micron
- 20 micron
Advantages:
- Handles more sediment
- Longer lifespan
- Higher flow rates
Common uses:
- Pre-filtration
- Borehole water
- Sediment removal
Lower Micron Rating
Examples:
- 5 micron
- 1 micron
Advantages:
- Removes smaller particles
- Provides cleaner filtration
Common uses:
- Drinking water systems
- Reverse osmosis protection
- Sensitive equipment
Common Water Filter Micron Ratings Explained
100 Micron Filters
These are used for removing large particles.
Applications:
- Raw water filtration
- Irrigation systems
- Initial sediment removal
Removes:
- Sand particles
- Large debris
- Visible sediment
50 Micron Filters
A 50-micron filter is commonly used as a first-stage filter.
Suitable for:
- Borehole water
- Pre-filtration systems
- Large sediment removal
It protects downstream equipment from excessive dirt buildup.
20 Micron Filters
A 20-micron cartridge provides finer sediment removal.
Used in:
- Residential filtration
- Commercial systems
- Water treatment pre-filters
It offers a balance between filtration quality and flow rate.
10 Micron Filters
A 10-micron filter removes smaller suspended particles.
Common applications:
- Drinking water filtration
- Commercial water systems
- Equipment protection
5 Micron Filters
A 5-micron filter is one of the most commonly used filtration levels.
It is often installed before:
- Reverse osmosis membranes
- UV systems
- Fine filtration stages
Benefits:
- Removes fine sediment
- Protects expensive components
- Improves water clarity
1-micron filters
A 1 micron filter provides very fine filtration.
Applications include:
- High-quality drinking water
- Sensitive industrial processes
- Final polishing filtration
However, a 1-micron filter may clog faster if used without proper pre-filtration.
Is a Lower Micron Filter Always Better?
Many people assume that the smallest micron rating is always the best option.
This is not always true.
A lower micron filter:
✔ Removes smaller particles
✔ Produces finer filtration
However:
✘ It may reduce water flow
✘ It may require more frequent replacement
✘ It may clog quickly if the incoming water contains heavy sediment
The correct filtration level depends on:
- Water source
- Contamination level
- Required water quality
- System design
Understanding Nominal and Absolute Micron Ratings
Not all micron ratings are measured the same way.
Nominal Micron Rating
A nominal rating refers to the average percentage of particles removed at a specific size.
Example:
A 5-micron nominal filter removes most particles around 5 microns.
Nominal filters are commonly used in general water filtration applications.
Absolute Micron Rating
An absolute rating provides a more precise filtration measurement.
It indicates the largest particle size that can pass through the filter.
Absolute filters are often used where consistent filtration performance is required.
Applications include:
- Medical facilities
- Laboratories
- Industrial processes
Choosing the Correct Water Filter Micron Rating
The correct micron rating depends on your application.
Municipal Water
Municipal water usually requires protection from:
- Pipe sediment
- Rust particles
- Chlorine taste
Typical filtration:
- A 5-micron sediment filter
- Carbon filtration
Borehole Water
Borehole water can contain:
- Sand
- Silt
- Iron particles
- Mineral deposits
Recommended approach:
- Larger micron sediment filter
- Fine sediment filter
- Additional treatment based on water testing
Reverse Osmosis Systems
Reverse osmosis membranes are sensitive components.
A typical RO system uses:
- 5 micron sediment filtration
- Carbon filtration
- RO membrane filtration
The pre-filters help protect the membrane and extend its lifespan.
Commercial and Industrial Applications
Large-scale systems require careful micron selection.
Industries may use multiple filtration stages:
- Coarse filtration
- Fine sediment removal
- Carbon filtration
- Membrane filtration
A professional water analysis helps determine the correct setup.
Water Filter Micron Rating and Filter Replacement
The micron rating affects how quickly a filter becomes blocked.
A smaller micron filter captures more particles, meaning it may require replacement sooner.
Signs of a blocked filter include:
- Reduced water pressure
- Slow filling times
- Increased pump pressure
- Poor water flow
Regular maintenance ensures consistent filtration performance.
Why Micron Ratings Matter in Water Treatment
Understanding micron ratings helps you:
- Protect filtration equipment
- Improve water quality
- Reduce maintenance costs
- Select suitable replacement cartridges
- Extend system lifespan
Choosing the correct water filter micron rating ensures your filtration system operates efficiently.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a 5-micron water filter remove?
A 5-micron filter removes fine sediment, dirt, rust particles, and suspended solids.
Is a 1 micron filter better than a 5 micron filter?
A 1 micron filter provides finer filtration, but it may clog faster. The best choice depends on your water quality and application.
What micron filter should I use for borehole water?
Borehole water often requires multiple filtration stages. The correct micron rating depends on sediment levels and water testing results.
What micron filter is used before reverse osmosis?
Most RO systems use a 5-micron sediment filter before the membrane to protect it from particles.
Conclusion
A water filter micron rating plays an important role in determining filtration performance. Understanding the difference between coarse and fine filtration helps you choose the correct cartridge for your home, business, or industrial application.
From sediment removal to reverse osmosis protection, selecting the correct micron level improves water quality, protects equipment, and reduces unnecessary maintenance.
