Municipal Water Backup System: Why Every Property Needs One
Across South Africa, many municipalities are introducing scheduled water interruptions—commonly referred to as water shedding—to manage ageing infrastructure, maintenance work, drought conditions and increasing demand. Unlike an unexpected burst pipe or emergency outage, water shedding often occurs on a scheduled basis, leaving homes and businesses without running water for several hours or even days.
A municipal water backup system ensures that your property continues to receive water during these interruptions. By storing municipal water when it is available and supplying it when the mains are switched off, a properly designed backup system helps you maintain normal daily activities and avoid costly disruptions.
Whether you own a home, manage an office, operate a restaurant or run an industrial facility, investing in a municipal water backup system provides peace of mind and protects your daily operations.
What Is a Municipal Water Backup System?
A municipal water backup system stores treated municipal water in a dedicated storage tank and supplies it to the property whenever the municipal supply is interrupted.
A typical system may include:
- Water storage tank
- Booster pump
- Pressure controller
- Float valve
- Isolation valves
- Sediment filtration (where required)
- UV disinfection or additional treatment (depending on the application)
When municipal water is available, the tank automatically fills. During water shedding, the stored water continues supplying the building through the pump and pressure system.
Why Is Water Shedding Becoming More Common?
Several factors contribute to scheduled water interruptions in South Africa, including:
- Increasing demand for potable water
- Ageing municipal infrastructure
- Planned maintenance of water networks
- Pump station upgrades
- Reservoir management
- Drought conditions in some regions
- Emergency repairs following pipe bursts
As municipalities work to maintain water infrastructure, scheduled interruptions are becoming more common in many areas.
Why Every Property Needs a Backup Water Supply
Losing access to running water affects far more than drinking water.
A municipal water backup system allows you to continue using water for essential daily activities.
These include:
- Drinking and cooking
- Toilets
- Showers
- Hand washing
- Laundry
- Cleaning
- Irrigation (where appropriate)
- Business operations
Instead of waiting for the municipal supply to return, you can continue with minimal disruption.
Benefits for Homeowners
For homeowners, water shedding can quickly become inconvenient.
A backup system helps ensure:
- Running water during scheduled outages
- Improved family comfort
- Better hygiene
- Reliable toilet flushing
- Water available for cooking and cleaning
- Reduced stress during prolonged interruptions
Families with young children, elderly residents, or people working from home benefit particularly from a continuous water supply.
Benefits for Businesses
For businesses, water interruptions often result in lost productivity and dissatisfied customers.
A municipal water backup system helps:
- Reduce operational downtime
- Maintain customer service
- Protect staff productivity
- Support hygiene requirements
- Reduce business interruptions
- Improve operational resilience
Restaurants, hotels, offices, schools, medical facilities and manufacturing plants all depend on reliable access to water.
Choosing the Right Backup System
No two properties have the same water requirements.
When selecting a municipal water backup system, consider:
- Daily water consumption
- Number of occupants
- Duration of typical water shedding
- Available installation space
- Water pressure requirements
- Future expansion plans
A professional assessment helps determine the correct storage capacity, pump size, and treatment requirements for your property.
Components of a Complete Municipal Water Backup System
A reliable municipal water backup system is more than just a storage tank. Each component plays an important role in ensuring a continuous and dependable water supply during water shedding.
Water Storage Tank
The storage tank is the heart of the system.
It stores municipal water while it is available and provides a reserve supply during scheduled interruptions.
Choosing the correct tank size depends on:
- Daily water usage
- Number of occupants
- Duration of water shedding
- Available installation space
A professional assessment ensures the tank is neither undersized nor unnecessarily oversized.
Booster Pump
When municipal pressure is unavailable, a booster pump delivers stored water throughout the property.
A correctly sized pump provides consistent pressure for:
- Bathrooms
- Kitchens
- Showers
- Toilets
- Laundry rooms
- Outdoor taps
For larger commercial properties, multiple pumps or variable-speed booster systems may be recommended.
Pressure Controller
A pressure controller automatically starts and stops the pump as water is used.
This helps maintain stable water pressure while protecting the pump from unnecessary wear.
Float Valve
A float valve controls the water level inside the storage tank.
As the tank fills, the valve closes automatically to prevent overflow and unnecessary water loss.
Isolation Valves
Isolation valves allow sections of the system to be serviced without shutting down the entire water supply.
They also simplify maintenance and future upgrades.
Should You Add Water Treatment?
Municipal water is generally treated before it reaches your property. However, storing water for extended periods may affect its taste, odour or overall quality.
Depending on your application, additional treatment may be beneficial.
Sediment Filtration
Sediment filters remove particles such as:
- Sand
- Rust
- Silt
- Dirt
This protects pumps, valves, and downstream equipment while improving water clarity.
Activated Carbon Filtration
Activated carbon filtration helps improve:
- Taste
- Odour
- Chlorine reduction
It is a popular option for households that use stored municipal water for drinking and cooking.
UV Disinfection
For applications where microbiological protection is important, UV disinfection provides an additional layer of treatment by inactivating bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms without adding chemicals.
Ultrafiltration
Where higher-quality drinking water is required, ultrafiltration removes suspended solids, bacteria and many microorganisms while maintaining valuable minerals in the water.
The most appropriate treatment solution depends on your water quality, storage duration and intended use.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Installing a backup system without proper planning can reduce its effectiveness.
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Choosing a tank that is too small.
- Installing an undersized booster pump.
- Ignoring available installation space.
- Failing to maintain the storage tank.
- Neglecting filter replacement.
- Installing equipment without a professional assessment.
- Forgetting to disinfect or clean storage tanks periodically.
A properly designed system delivers better performance, improved reliability and a longer service life.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much water storage do I need?
The required storage capacity depends on your daily water consumption, the number of occupants and the expected duration of water shedding. A professional assessment helps determine the correct tank size.
Can I drink water from a municipal backup tank?
Yes. If the system is correctly installed and the storage tank is maintained properly, stored municipal water remains suitable for its intended use. Depending on storage conditions and application, additional filtration or UV treatment may also be recommended.
Will I still have water pressure during water shedding?
Yes. When fitted with a correctly sized booster pump and pressure controller, your backup system can continue supplying water at a comfortable pressure throughout your property.
Can businesses install municipal water backup systems?
Absolutely. Offices, hotels, schools, restaurants, factories and healthcare facilities all benefit from reliable backup water systems that minimise operational downtime during municipal water interruptions.
